"Thinking about wanting to be white in 2008 in 2013; part 2"
A 7 minute video performance piece
As a teenager who unknowingly wanted to be white, I was never satisfied with the physical attributes I possessed which highlighted my otherness. I would steal my mother’s makeup, as she was much lighter than I was, and apply it onto my entire face to change my skin tone. This daily process of lightening my skin made me feel more normal, and more beautiful, even though the rest of my body remained brown. With this piece, I reenact this beauty ritual by applying the same shade and brand of foundation as I used to.
